Indoor Gym Lighting
Glendale USD upgraded the aging fluorescent high bay lighting in the Edison Pacific Gym, serving both Pacific Park and Thomas Edison Elementary School, to top-quality TORPEDO-LED high bays from DECO Lighting. With a focus placed on reducing energy consumption and increasing light levels on the floor, the decision to go with DECO Digital LED Systems was simple.
Shared between Pacific Park and Thomas Edison Elementary, the Pacific Park Community Gym is a valuable resource for the surrounding community. The space provides a venue for various school functions, community meetings, indoor sports matches, as well as after school programs. The importance of this community space underscores the necessity for quality lighting to illuminate the venue properly and accommodate its flexibility as a multi-functional space. With an aging lighting system utilizing 8-lamp fluorescent high bay units, the site electrician noted that it was a headache and costly endeavor to repeatedly replace the fluorescent lamps in waves as they burned out. Seeking to eliminate the constant need for maintenance and also find a way to improve the light levels while reducing energy costs, DECO Digital LED Systems proved to be the optimal solution to properly illuminate the space.
With a total of 75 fixtures set for replacement, the existing 8x42W CFL lamps were upgraded to 160W Torpedo LED high bay units from DECO Lighting. With the Torpedo fixtures operating at 161 system watts compared to the 48 system watts of each CFL bulb, the onefor-one fixture replacement accounted for a reduction of 16,725 watts at the system level. In addition to the reduced energy consumption, the Torpedo LED system carries an L70 lifetime rating of 100,000+ hours and is DLC-listed for significant utility rebates on each fixture which helped to further offset the initial investment.
The top-quality LED solution provided by DECO Lighting carries multiple benefits over the gym’s previous fluorescent system, including flicker-free illumination to reduce eye strain and fatigue that could impact the indoor sports games held at the community gym. The crisp illumination delivered by their new LED system will provide community residents and students with increased light levels on the floor along with a more balanced distribution that eliminates the shadow spots that were prevalent with the previous system. Upgrading from their existing luorescent lighting to the innovative Torpedo LED system will lead to a 58% reduction in energy consumption. With the lower system wattage of their new LED system and expected usage of 6 hours per day, the gym will see a reduced total energy consumption of 36,627 kilowatt hours annually. Coupled with the average rate for electricity in Glendale as of June 2016, this equates to an expected savings of $6,592 annually.
